The Most Common Chicken Predators

Before you can predator-proof a coop, you need to understand the threats. The predators that kill the most backyard chickens in North America are:

• Raccoons: Smart enough to open latches, strong enough to tear chicken wire, and active at dusk — the exact time many keepers forget to close the coop.
• Foxes: Will dig under fencing, squeeze through 4-inch gaps, and carry off a hen in seconds. Most common in rural and suburban areas.
• Hawks and owls: Aerial predators that strike free-ranging flocks during the day (hawks) and at dusk (owls). Overhead netting is the only reliable defense.
• Weasels and mink: Can squeeze through 1-inch openings and will kill an entire flock in one night. Only ½-inch hardware cloth stops them.
• Snakes: Eat eggs and small chicks. ½-inch mesh prevents entry. Most common in warm climates.
• Neighborhood dogs: The #1 daytime predator in suburban areas. Perimeter fencing is essential.

The 5 Layers of Predator-Proofing

Effective predator defense is not about one product — it is about layering multiple barriers. Here are the five layers, in order of importance:

Layer 1: Hardware Cloth on All Openings

Replace any chicken wire with ½-inch galvanized hardware cloth. Cover windows, vents, and any opening larger than ½ inch. Secure with screws and washers — not staples, which predators can pull out.

Layer 2: Two-Step Locks

Raccoons can open slide bolts, hook-and-eye latches, and simple turn-buttons. Use two-step locks that require lifting AND turning, or use carabiner clips and padlocks. Every door, nesting box lid, and access panel needs a secure lock.

Layer 3: Anti-Dig Barrier

Foxes, dogs, and raccoons will dig under coop walls and run fencing. The most effective solution is a hardware cloth apron — a 12-18 inch strip of mesh laid flat on the ground extending outward from the coop base, covered with soil or gravel. This stops diggers without requiring you to bury fencing deeply.

Layer 4: Automatic Door

The single biggest cause of flock losses is a door left open at dusk. An automatic coop door closes with a light sensor at dusk and opens at dawn, eliminating human error entirely.

Layer 5: Perimeter Fencing

Electric poultry netting creates a psychological and physical barrier that deters foxes, coyotes, dogs, and even bears. A 48-inch net with a solar energizer is the gold standard for free-range flocks.

Overhead Protection

Hawks are the most common daytime predator for free-range flocks. Your options include:

• Overhead netting: Covers the entire run. Most effective but requires support poles.
• Covered run: A solid or mesh roof over the run area. Standard on many prefab coops.
• Visual deterrents: Reflective tape, hanging CDs, or predator-eye balloons. Partially effective but hawks adapt quickly.
• Roosters: Alert the flock to aerial threats. Effective but noisy — check local ordinances.

What to Look for in a Predator-Proof Coop

• Locking latches that require two motions to open
• Solid floor or raised design to prevent digging underneath
