Our Mission
We built CoopSize Calc because we were tired of guessing. When we started our own backyard flock, every source gave different numbers — how much space per bird, how much feed to buy, whether chickens actually save money on eggs. We wanted tools that gave clear, actionable answers based on real data.
Today, CoopSize Calc serves thousands of backyard chicken keepers monthly with four specialized calculators and in-depth guides. Everything is free, always will be, and designed to help you make better decisions for your flock.
Our Methodology
Every number in our calculators is sourced and verified. Here's where our data comes from:
Space Requirements
Based on USDA Poultry Housing Guidelines and University Extension publications (e.g., University of Kentucky, Penn State). We cross-reference breed-specific recommendations from the American Poultry Association.
Feed Calculations
Derived from published feed conversion ratios by Purina, Nutrena, and Scratch and Peck Feeds. Validated against USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) poultry feed data.
Cost Estimates
Updated quarterly using pricing from Tractor Supply, Rural King, and Amazon. Regional adjustments are noted where costs vary significantly (e.g., Pacific Northwest vs. Southeast).
Egg ROI
Egg production rates use USDA averages (250-300 eggs/hen/year for production breeds). Store egg pricing is sourced from USDA Egg Market News and updated for current market conditions.
